When should I outsource my bookkeeping?

If bookkeeping is regularly behind, evenings are being spent uploading receipts, VAT deadlines create a rush, or you no longer trust the figures in the software, the business has probably outgrown doing it informally.

Signs it is time to hand it over

If bookkeeping is regularly behind, evenings are being spent uploading receipts, VAT deadlines create a rush, or you no longer trust the figures in the software, the business has probably outgrown doing it informally.

Be realistic about your own time

Doing the bookkeeping yourself can look cheaper because there is no invoice from a provider. The real comparison is what your time is worth elsewhere in the business and whether the records are good enough to support decisions and tax filings.

What should improve when you outsource

A good outsourced service should give you a regular process, current records, fewer year-end surprises and someone responsible for keeping the finance admin moving. It should remove work, not simply move data entry to somebody else.

Don't wait until it is a mess

The easiest handover is while the records are still reasonably clean. Waiting until bookkeeping is six months behind usually means paying for catch-up work before the ongoing service can even begin.
