What does a Virtual Finance Director actually do?

A Virtual FD doesn't simply present a set of accounts. They explain what changed, challenge assumptions and help decide what action follows from the numbers.

Turn the numbers into decisions

A Virtual FD doesn't simply present a set of accounts. They explain what changed, challenge assumptions and help decide what action follows from the numbers.

Look at what is coming next, not just back

Budgets, cash forecasts and scenarios are central to the role. The aim is to understand the likely financial effect of a decision before the business commits to it.

Ask the questions that need asking

A good FD asks the questions that can be uncomfortable but useful: Is the margin good enough? Can we afford the hire? What happens if sales are 15% lower? Which customers or services are actually making money?

Put some financial discipline around the plan

They also help establish a regular rhythm of reporting, targets and review so decisions aren't made from a different spreadsheet or gut feeling every month.
