Where Xero works well

Xero suits many small and growing businesses that want cloud access, bank feeds, invoicing, digital records and an accounting platform that can connect with other business apps. It's particularly useful when the business and its accountant need to work from the same live data.

It still needs setting up properly

Xero is the tool; it still needs setting up properly. The chart of accounts, VAT settings, bank rules, invoice processes, user permissions and integrations need to reflect how your business actually works.

When you might need something alongside Xero

Higher transaction volumes or specialist workflows can require additional software for receipt capture, approvals, expenses, stock, ecommerce or reporting. What matters is the smallest sensible technology stack, not an app for everything.

Start with how the business works

Don't choose accounting software only because it is familiar or cheap. Start with what you need the finance process to do, then make sure the software can support it reliably as the business grows.
