It isn't just about the size of the business

A small business doesn't automatically need a formal monthly management pack. The better question is whether the owner is making decisions that would be improved by current financial information.

When they start to become valuable

They are particularly useful where margins move, cash is tight, staff are being recruited, borrowing is involved or the business is growing quickly. The cost of a poor decision can then be much higher than the cost of the reporting.

Keep the reporting proportionate

A smaller business may only need a concise report with a handful of KPIs and a cash view. There's no value in producing a corporate-style pack that nobody reads.

Don't wait until you have lost visibility

Management reporting is easiest to introduce while the records are clean and the business is understandable. Waiting until growth has made the numbers confusing makes the first few months harder.
