Do I need to report income from a side business?
Possibly. A small business alongside your job can still create reporting obligations. The trading allowance is based on qualifying gross income, not profit, and has conditions. Keep records and check the rules even if the activity feels informal or payments arrive through an app.
These answers provide general information, not advice tailored to your circumstances. Rules can change and exceptions may apply — speak to the CASS team before making a tax, accounting or financial decision.
Look at total receipts
Add up income from relevant trading activities before deducting fees or expenses. Having several platforms or small jobs does not give each its own trading allowance.
Check the allowance
Eligible individuals may use the £1,000 annual trading allowance. Exceptions apply, including certain income from connected businesses. It is not a separate allowance for each side business.
Expenses are an alternative
Where partial relief applies, you generally choose between the allowance and actual allowable expenses for that income. You cannot simply deduct both. Reporting can still be useful or required in some circumstances.
Check your next step
Keep sales and cost records from the start. CASS can assess whether registration or reporting is needed and which treatment suits your circumstances.
